Enrolling Dependents

You may enroll your eligible dependents when you enroll, or during any SHBP Open Enrollment Period. See "When Coverage Begins" for effective dates of coverage. If you have a new dependent, you may enroll the dependent effective the date you acquired the dependent provided you submit a completed application within 60 days of the dependents's eligibility. If you do not enroll the new dependent within 60 days, you must wait until the annual Open Enrollment Period.

If you do not enroll an eligible dependent because of other coverage and that coverage is lost, you can enroll that dependent providing you submit a completed application within 60 days of the event. Coverage for that dependent will be effective the first day of the payroll period in which the event occurs if you are a biweekly employee. For all other employees, the coverage will be effective on the date of the event.
